Standing Together for Our Elders

We all have parents and grandparents, or we know someone caring for an elder. But what happens when these seniors have no one to turn to? What if they are alone, without family, or unable to access the care they need?

A sudden health crisis can change everything. Many seniors find themselves in hospitals, vulnerable, disoriented, and unsure of what comes next. When they’re discharged, their families, despite their love, may not be able to meet their growing care needs. Long-term care becomes less of a choice and more of a necessity.

For many families, navigating elder care is overwhelming. They are unfamiliar with the system, unaware of their rights, and unsure where to turn for help. The situation is even more difficult for immigrant elders, especially those from Asian communities. Language barriers and cultural disconnection leave them isolated, unable to express their needs, and struggling to navigate an unfamiliar world.

These are the same elders who made sacrifices to raise their children, believing they would be cared for in return. But their children are stretched thin in today’s fast-paced world, balancing work, caregiving, and financial responsibilities. Despite their best efforts, they can’t always be there.

Seniors who once thrived in tight-knit communities now spend their days alone. When illness or disability strikes, their suffering deepens. Worse, the limited availability of culturally appropriate elder care means they often end up in unfamiliar settings, where loneliness, confusion, and emotional distress take a heavy toll. Some pass away not just from illness but from heartbreak.

This is a crisis we cannot ignore.

A Solution Rooted in Community

That’s why we came together to create a solution. The Golden Age Village Foundation of BC was founded with one mission: to ensure that elders live with dignity, surrounded by their language, culture, and community.

In December 2024, the Vietnamese BC Friendship Foundation officially became Golden Age Village Foundation of BC, reaffirming our commitment to inclusive elder care. We’ve spoken with government officials, including the Honourable Adrian Dix, former Minister of Health, to push for action. But we need your help to make change happen.

Since 2024, we’ve gathered thousands of petition signatures, but we need at least 12,000 to present our case to the Ministry of Health formally. These petitions serve one purpose: to establish a dedicated elder care center that meets the needs of our aging community.
